How Teachers Should Teach Reading Passages and Reading Comprehension in ESL Classes
Reading is one of the most important language skills for ESL learners. Through reading passages, students develop vocabulary, grammar awareness, pronunciation, spelling, and critical thinking skills. However, successful reading comprehension does not happen automatically. Teachers play a central role in guiding students step by step before, during, and after reading to ensure real understanding.
In ESL classrooms—especially with young learners—reading should be an interactive and supportive process, not a stressful one. This article provides practical strategies teachers can use to teach reading passages effectively.
Before Reading: Preparing Students
1. Activate Background Knowledge
Before students read the passage, teachers should introduce the topic and connect it to students’ real lives. This helps learners understand the text more easily because they already have ideas in their minds.
Teachers can ask simple questions such as:
- What do you know about this topic?
- Have you seen or experienced this before?
Activating background knowledge prepares students mentally and increases their interest in reading.
2. Teach Key Vocabulary
Pre-teaching important or difficult words helps students feel confident before they start reading. Teachers should choose only the most necessary words, not every new word.
Vocabulary can be taught using:
- Pictures and real objects
- Simple definitions
- Gestures and actions
- Arabic meanings when needed
This step reduces fear and allows students to focus on meaning instead of stopping at every unfamiliar word.
3. Set a Clear Purpose for Reading
Students should always know why they are reading. Teachers can explain the purpose clearly, for example:
- Read to find the main idea
- Read to answer questions
- Read to find specific information
A clear purpose gives direction and improves concentration.
During Reading: Guiding Understanding
1. First Reading: General Understanding
In the first reading, students should focus on understanding the general idea. Teachers may read the passage aloud first, or ask students to read silently.
At this stage, teachers should avoid too many interruptions. The goal is understanding the message, not analyzing every sentence.
2. Second Reading: Detailed Understanding
During the second reading, students read more carefully. Teachers can pause to ask simple questions and check comprehension.
Examples of guiding questions:
- Who is the passage about?
- What happened first?
- What happened at the end?
3. Reading Aloud Practice
Reading aloud helps students improve pronunciation, fluency, and confidence. Teachers should correct mistakes gently and focus on encouragement.
It is helpful to let students read one sentence at a time instead of long paragraphs.
After Reading: Checking Comprehension
1. Comprehension Questions
After reading, teachers should ask different types of questions to check understanding.
- Who is the passage about?
- What happened?
- Where did it happen?
- Why did it happen?
2. True or False Questions
True or false questions help students focus on details and practice careful reading. They are especially useful for beginners.
3. Multiple Choice Questions
Multiple choice questions train students to choose correct answers and understand meaning without writing long sentences.
4. Short Answer Questions
Short answers encourage students to use their own words. Teachers should encourage full sentences when possible, especially with higher levels.
Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills
Finding the Main Idea
Teachers should explain that the main idea is what the whole passage is about. It is not a small detail.
Identifying Supporting Details
Supporting details give extra information about the main idea. Teachers can highlight or underline these details in the text.
Guessing Meaning from Context
Students should learn not to stop reading for every new word. Teachers can show them how to guess meaning by using surrounding words and sentences.
Advice for Students: How to Improve Reading Skills
1. Do Not Translate Every Word
Word-by-word translation slows down reading and causes confusion. Students should focus on understanding the general meaning.
2. Read the Questions First
Reading the questions before the passage helps students know what to look for.
3. Read Regularly at Home
Reading short stories, simple passages, and educational texts at home improves speed and confidence.
4. Practice Reading Aloud
Reading aloud improves pronunciation and helps students become more fluent speakers.
Common Mistakes Teachers Should Avoid
- Explaining every single word in the passage
- Reading the text only once
- Not checking students’ understanding
- Correcting mistakes in a harsh or discouraging way
Conclusion
Teaching reading passages and reading comprehension requires planning, patience, and clear steps. When teachers guide students before, during, and after reading, learners become confident readers who understand and enjoy English texts. Effective reading instruction builds a strong foundation for all other language skills.
