Time expressions are words or phrases that tell us when an action happens. They are essential in English because they help students choose the correct tense, make sentences clear, and communicate meaning accurately. Mastering time expressions improves both speaking and writing skills.
1. What Are Time Expressions?
Time expressions answer important questions such as: When? How often? For how long?
- today
- yesterday
- tomorrow
- every day
- last week

2. Time Expressions with the Present Simple
We use the Present Simple with time expressions that show routines, habits, or repeated actions: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day / every week.

3. Time Expressions with the Present Continuous
The Present Continuous is used with actions happening right now: now, at the moment, today, this week.
- I am studying English now.
- They are working this week.
4. Time Expressions with the Past Simple
The Past Simple is used with finished actions: yesterday, last night, last week, two days ago, in 2023.
- I visited my friend yesterday.

5. Time Expressions with the Future (Will / Going to)
Future tenses use: tomorrow, next week, next month, soon, in the future.

6. Time Expressions with the Present Perfect
The Present Perfect links the past with the present: ever, never, already, yet, just, for, since.
- I have already finished my homework.
- She has lived here for five years.
7. Position of Time Expressions in a Sentence
- At the beginning: Yesterday, I studied English.
