Hadith Qudsi - Sacred Sayings of Allah

In the study of Islam, we encounter many types of sacred texts. Most Muslims are familiar with the Holy Quran — the direct, unchanged Word of Allah — and with Hadith, the recorded sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him). However, there exists a special, often lesser-known category that sits beautifully between the two: the Hadith Qudsi (الحديث القدسي).

Introduction — Why This Topic Matters

In the study of Islam, we encounter many types of sacred texts. Most Muslims are familiar with the Holy Quran — the direct, unchanged Word of Allah (Glory be to Him) — and with Hadith, the recorded sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him). However, there exists a special, often lesser-known category that sits beautifully between the two: the Hadith Qudsi (الحديث القدسي).

Understanding Hadith Qudsi is essential for every Muslim student because it deepens our connection to Allah's message and gives us a richer appreciation of how divine guidance reached humanity. In this lesson, we will explore what Hadith Qudsi means, how it differs from the Quran and regular Hadith, and most importantly, how its timeless wisdom applies to our everyday lives.

The Meaning of "Qudsi"

The Arabic word قُدْسِي (Qudsi) comes from the root word قُدْس (Quds), meaning "holiness" or "purity." It is derived from the same root as one of Allah's Beautiful Names: القُدُّوس (Al-Quddus) — The Most Holy, The Most Pure.

هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمُ

"He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection..."

📖 Surah Al-Hashr (59:23)

So when we say "Hadith Qudsi," we are literally saying a "Holy Hadith" or "Sacred Narration" — one that is attributed to Allah (Glory be to Him) Himself, making it distinct from a regular Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.

What Exactly Is a Hadith Qudsi?

A Hadith Qudsi is a report from the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) in which he conveys to the people what Allah (Glory be to Him) says — but this information is not part of the Quran. Think of it this way:

The meaning and content come from Allah (Glory be to Him).
The wording and phrasing are from Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him).
It was not necessarily delivered through the Angel جبريل (Jibreel) — it may have been inspired through other means, such as a رُؤْيَا (ru'yā) — a true dream.

This is a crucial distinction. In a Hadith Qudsi, the Prophet ﷺ typically begins by saying: "Allah (Glory be to Him) said..." or "Your Lord said..." — clearly attributing the core message to the Creator, while expressing it in his own blessed words.

Hadith Qudsi vs. The Holy Quran — Key Differences

Understanding the difference between the Quran and Hadith Qudsi is one of the most مُهِم (muhimmimportant) lessons in Hadith sciences. Let's compare them clearly:

Aspect The Holy Quran Hadith Qudsi
WordingDirectly from Allah — word for wordFrom the Prophet ﷺ (meaning from Allah)
DeliveryOnly through Angel Jibreel (جبريل)Through Jibreel, inspiration, or dream (رُؤْيَا)
Recitation in Prayer Required in Salah Cannot be recited in Salah
Miraculous NatureInimitable — no one can produce its likeNot considered inimitable
Reward for ReadingSpecial reward per letter recitedGeneral reward of learning knowledge
AuthenticityAll mutawatir (mass-transmitted)Varies — some strong, some weak
💡 Key Takeaway: The اخْتِلَاف (ikhtilāfdifference) بَيْن (baynbetween) the Quran and Hadith Qudsi lies primarily in their wording, method of delivery, and liturgical status. Both carry divine authority, but the Quran holds the highest and most protected position.

A Beautiful Example of Hadith Qudsi

One of the most profound and moving examples of Hadith Qudsi teaches us about the deep, reciprocal relationship between Allah and His servants:

مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ أَحَبَّ اللَّهُ لِقَاءَهُ وَمَنْ كَرِهَ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ كَرِهَ اللَّهُ لِقَاءَهُ

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah (Glory be to Him) said: 'If My servant likes to meet Me, I like to meet him; and if he dislikes meeting Me, I dislike meeting him.'"

📚 Reported in Sahih Al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

This Hadith Qudsi reveals the incredible mercy and love of Allah. It tells us that our longing for Allah is not one-sided — when a believer yearns to be close to their Creator, Allah yearns for them too. What a comforting and motivating thought!

📖 Supporting Quranic Verse:

فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

"So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me."

📖 Surah Al-Baqarah (2:152)

"Qudsi" means holy or pure, derived from Allah's name Al-Quddus.
The content of Hadith Qudsi is from Allah, but the wording is from the Prophet ﷺ.
The Quran was brought only by Angel Jibreel, while Hadith Qudsi may also have been inspired through dreams.
Hadith Qudsi shares the same points that differentiate regular Hadith from the Quran.

May Allah grant us the love of meeting Him, the sincerity to seek His knowledge, and the wisdom to apply it in our lives. As we learned from the Hadith Qudsi: when we take one step toward Allah, He comes running toward us. Let us take that step today.

وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَم — والحمد لله رب العالمين

And Allah knows best — All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
