Grammar: so versus such
Page 53 — Emphasis & Intensifiers
We use so and such to make statements stronger (to emphasize them). They both express a similar meaning to very. However, there are structural differences:
💠 so + adjective / adverb
It's so hot today.
He walks so slowly.
💠 such + (adjective) + noun
You are such an angel.
It's such a hot day today.
He is such an idiot.
Use the indefinite article a/an after such in the singular, but not in the plural.
✖ We cannot use so before a noun.
✖ We cannot use such before adjectives if there is no noun following them.
✖ We cannot use such before adverbs.
Exercise 1: Complete with so or such
Type your answer in each blank

3It was cold weather outside.
4Iraq is a beautiful country.
5Petrol is expensive.
6My Internet connection is slow.
7I wish she didn't drive fast.
Exercise 2: Choose so, such, or such a
Select the correct option
1
He speaks _____ quickly.
2
I like Mawda and Massara. They are _____ nice girls.
3
I was surprised that he looked _____ well after his long illness.
4
Everything is _____ cheap here, isn't it?

The weather is awful, isn't it? I didn't expect it to be _____ horrible day.
Islamic Architecture Connection: Relate geometric shapes to Islamic architecture — point out that domes are hemispheres, minarets are cylinders, and arches are semicircles. Show images of the Al-Kadhimiya Mosque in Baghdad as a real-world example.
Tiles & Tessellations: Islamic tile patterns use polygons — triangles, squares, hexagons, and octagons. Have students identify shapes in tile patterns and practice using descriptive adjectives: "such a beautiful pattern" or "so intricate."
Pronunciation Practice: For the consonant sounds lesson, have students work in pairs reading the flashcard words aloud. Iraqi students often find the /dʒ/ and /ʃ/ sounds challenging — compare them to the Arabic letters ج and ش.
Gamification Tip: Use the classification exercise as a timed challenge. Divide the class into teams and see which team can correctly classify all 16 words first. Award bonus points for correct pronunciation.
so / such Extension: Ask students to describe their school, city, or mosque using so and such: "Baghdad is such a historic city." "The Tigris is so beautiful." This builds cultural pride while reinforcing grammar.
Assessment Suggestion: After completing both exercises, students should score at least 70% to proceed. Use the -ed endings rules as a mini-dictation exercise — read verbs aloud and have students write the past tense, then identify the sound.
