Interactive Pronunciation Exercise: Sound Sorting for /f/ and /v/
تمرين نطق (3) – تصنيف الأصوات بين /f/ و /v/
Welcome to Exercise 3 of our pronunciation series. Auditory discrimination—the ability to hear the difference between similar sounds—is the first step toward speaking English like a native. In this activity, students will engage in a Sound Sorting Challenge to master the labiodental fricatives /f/ and /v/.
Exercise Instructions & Setup
Goal: Listen to the target words and categorize them based on their dominant consonant sound.
Step-by-Step:
- Listen to the teacher (or an audio recording) say the word.
- Identify if the vocal cords are vibrating (Voiced /v/) or silent (Voiceless /f/).
- Place the word in the correct column.
تعليمات التمرين: استمع إلى الكلمات ثم ضع كل كلمة في المربع الصحيح حسب صوتها (اهتزاز للحنجرة أو هواء فقط).
The Sorting Challenge: Word Bank
Here are the words for today's practice. Can you sort them correctly?
| /f/ Sound Group (Voiceless) | /v/ Sound Group (Voiced) |

|
⭐ Bonus Challenge: The word "Five" actually contains BOTH sounds! (Starts with /f/ and ends with /v/). |

as in "fish"
as in "van"
Pro-Tip for 2025 Learners
If you are using a smartphone, use the Voice-to-Text feature. Try to dictate the words above. If the phone writes "van" when you meant "fan," you know you need to work on reducing the vibration!

📌 Teaching Strategy: The Throat Check
Have students place two fingers on their Adam's apple. Ask them to make a long /ffff/ sound (no vibration). Then, without moving their lips, tell them to turn on the "motor" to make /vvvv/. They will instantly feel the physical difference.
