How Teachers Should Teach Possession Using Have / Has in ESL Classes
The verbs have and has are used to talk about possession and ownership. Students use them to describe family, objects, and personal belongings. Teachers should explain the difference clearly and give many examples.
When Do We Use Have and Has?
Use have with: I, You, We, They
Use has with: He, She, It
Affirmative Sentences
Subject + have / has + object
- I have a book.
- You have two sisters.
- They have a big house.
- He has a new phone.
- She has brown eyes.
Negative Sentences
Use do not (don't) and does not (doesn't).
- I do not have a car.
- They don't have a pet.
- He doesn't have a bike.
- She doesn't have any brothers.
Note: have stays in the base form after doesn't.
Questions with Have / Has
Use Do and Does to form questions.
- Do you have a pen?
- Do they have a teacher?
- Does he have a computer?
- Does she have long hair?
Short answers: Yes, I do. / No, I don't. | Yes, he does. / No, he doesn't.
Using Have / Has with Physical Description
- He has short hair.
- She has blue eyes.
- My friend has a kind smile.
Common Mistakes ESL Students Make
- Using has with I or they
- Using have with he or she
- Saying "He don't have" instead of "He doesn't have"
- Forgetting a / an with singular nouns
